Online Synergistic Control: Turning Data into Information to Enhance Dairy Management

There is a trend to larger dairy operations in order to maintain profitability. On these big farms, skilled labor becomes more and more a limiting production factor. Sensors have the potential to replace and/or support human senses to detect health related and nutritional problems (Wathes, 2008). In the last decades several sensors have been developed that provide accurate and continuous information during or after the milking process, such as milk yield, body weight, feed intake, milk conductivity,activity and more recently also milk composition. The use of these data to improve daily management and hence optimize production is rather limited. This is because their interpretation is seldom done on a statistical basis, leading to doubt in the interpretation of the information reflected by the sensor data (De Vries and Reneau, 2010; Mertens et al., 2011). This work presents the development of an online Synergistic Control (SGC) concept for the dairy production process, a promising approach to dealwith this issue.
