Yersinia enterocolitica (Ye) is a causative agent of gastrointestinal disorders, such as enteritis, enterocolitis, mesenteric lymphadenitis and septicemia. Typically for Gram-negative bacteria, it possesses lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as constituent of the cell envelope. LPS structure in wild type strains comprises lipid A, the core oligosaccharide which can be differentiated into outer and inner core (OC), and the O-specific polysaccharide (O-PS). O-PS, very variable in its structure, is immunogenic and required for full virulence of bacteria. Since, it is the outermost part of LPS, can also serve as the bacteriophage receptor.
