Anodically protected, stainless steel, shell and tube coolers have been the long standing, traditional, reliable, and economic choice when it comes to acid cooling applications in the sulphuric acid industry. Recently, Silicon Stainless Steel alloy coolers without anodic protection have been gaining acceptance in the industry. Will this trend stand the test of time? Will alloy coolers eventually replace the tried and proven anodically protected cooler? The pros and cons between these two products are not always straight forward to the end user and this needs to be understood thoroughly before making an informed decision one way or the other. Each sulphuric acid cooler application is unique and requires careful consideration of all the variables. This paper provides a comprehensive comparison between anodic protection stainless steel coolers and Si SS alloy coolers to help plant owners and operators determine what factors to consider when selecting the best product for their applications.
