Prototheca spp. are unicellular and ubiquitous algae that can cause mastitis in dairy cows. Different Prototheca spp. have been identified including P. wickerhamii, P. stagnora, P. ulmea, P. zopfii, P. blaschkeae, and P. cutis sp. novum. The species P. zopfii is further differentiated into P. zopfii genotype 1 and P. zopfii genotype 2. P. zopfii genotype 2 and P. blaschkeae have both been associated with bovine mastitis (Aouay et al., 2008), whereas P. zopfii genotype 1 is usually not associated withnaturally occurring mastitis. Unfortunately, mastitis associated with Prototheca spp. is not curable with any available medication. Therefore, to prevent the disease from further spread within the herd it is necessary to rapidly identify infected cows.A study by Tenhagen and others (1999) in a large German dairy herd found that cows with a higher lactation number and individual cow somatic cell count (SCC) during lactation were at greater risk for getting an infection with Prototheca spp.
