The corrosion behavior of stainless steel 316 was investigated in sodium thiosulfate solution containing chloride ions. The effect of sodium thiosulfate concentration on the electrochemical behavior and pit formation was investigated using potentiostatic, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Stainless steel 316 showed high pitting resistance in the presence of sodium thiosulfate and sodium chloride (0.1 wt.%) at different temperatures under open circuit condition. Polarizing stainless steel more than 0.5 V vs. SCE make the alloy susceptible to pitting. The presence of high concentration of sodium thiosulfate (0.1 M) inhibits the pit formation at 60°C even under 1.2 V vs. SCE applied potential. Inhibition effect of adding sodium thiosulfate on the pitting corrosion is considered by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
