摘要

Bipolar disorder is associated with neuropsychological impairment in various cognitive domains but the aetiology of such impairment remains largely unknown. Previous research has speculated that Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation may be a contributing factor. In the present study we evaluated the performance of 60 bipolar I patients in various cognitive tasks targeting attention, visual memory and executive function within the framework of the HPA axis hyperactivity model. We present here some preliminary results. Basal cortisol significantly correlated with visual memory as well as with planning and problem solving (i.e. high cortisol levels corresponded to lower test scores) whereas no statistically significant difference was observed between cognitive measures of suppressors and non suppressors at the Dexamethasone Suppression Test (DST).
