Relatives of people with severe mental illness constitute an "invisible healthcare system", being the patients' basic long-term care providers in the community. In response to the problems they face, family psychoeducational interventions have been developed with established efficacy. The present study aims at evaluating whether individual family psychoeducation, delivered in the context of a training program for mental health staff, confers an additional benefit to relatives' support groups in the treatment of schizophrenia. A randomization process allocated 80 relatives to the control and intervention conditions. Outcome measures included patient hospitalizations, family burden and cohesion; while data were gathered at three time points: at baseline, upon completion of the intervention and at one-year follow-up. For the intervention group, significant improvements were documented in family cohesion and burden scores. On the contrary, the control group did not display any significant changes in any of the outcome measures. Families can provide a valuable adjunct to mental health staff in promoting clinical and social recovery from major psychiatric disorders, and individual family psychoeducational interventions are useful means to this end.
