Among the many types of energy consumed within a building, lighting continues to account for a large proportion, and improved energy-saving strategies are urgently required. Furthermore, since power shortages have become a serious problem in the aftermath of the Great East Japan (GEJ) Earthquake, there is a growing demand for power conservation and energy saving with respect to the lighting in office buildings. Immediately after the GEJ Earthquake, many office buildings took their own energy-saving steps to reduce illuminance levels by not turning on some of their lights. However, turning off too many lights can lead to deterioration in comfort and/or productivity levels. New light-environment assessment capabilities and energy-saving technologies are needed. The authors have researched and developed a comfortable energy-saving lighting method that utilizes natural light more effectively by using the brightness level value as an index for the feeling of brightness perceived by individuals. [1] We provide a general overview of our research in this paper.
