When planning lighting, average horizontal illuminance at desk level is widely used as a guide line. Yet, many designers admit that it does not correspond with human sense of brightness. This research aims to collect data driven from simulations in order to clarify the relationship between average illuminance at desk level and luminance distribution of interior surfaces. Variables used in simulations are average illuminance level, reflection rate of interior surfaces, size of the room, lighting method and lighting equipment. By using synthetic variables derived from target average illuminance level and reflection rate of the surface, it is possible to predict the average luminance of the wall/ceiling, although results vary depending on the applied lighting method. Further analysis is required to include lighting method into predictive equation and to consider pleasant spatial brightness depending on intended room usage.
