This study investigated the influences of a giant tsunami on the salinity in the coastal water based on the greatest tsunamigenic earthquake scenario along the Nankai Trough occurring in the near future by conducting an ocean-tsunami coupled 3D simulation in Osaka Bay as a pilot shallow ocean. This realistic simulation using an unstructured-grid model was aided by the real-time ocean prediction and tsunami simulation, which was capable of evaluating the oceanic salinization induced by the tsunami into a semi-enclosed bay. Our simulated results provided two key findings. First, the area-average salinity increase of about 4 in the bay head can be induced until when the second tsunami wave intruded the coastal water. Second, this salinization could be recovered due to diffusion of the tidal current and advection of wind-driven current in a week after the earthquake.
