Pipeline sensing cables with strain free, loose-tube temperature sensing elements and simplex strain sensing elements are characterized for mechanical, thermal, strain sensing and temperature sensing performance using Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA). A linear temperature and strain measurement response is measured for these sensing cables within the operational range, with the temperature sensing fibers having a strain free window of 400 pounds and the strain sensing elements having an immediate response to cable strain.
