Experimental Study of Breaking Wave Loads on Sea-Crossing Bridges Piers

The breaking of waves is a common phenomenon and threatens to the safety of offshore structures located in the ocean wave splash zone. In this paper, a series of experiments in the wave flume were conducted to investigate the action of breaking waves on bridge piers. The breaking waves were generated using focused wave theory. Three breaking wave conditions and three pier models with different cross sections, dimensions, and orientations were employed in the experiments. The breaking wave loads were recorded for each pier model located in different region of breaking waves. The main conclusions can be drawn as follows: (1) the breaking wave load varies with the distance between the breaking location and the pier and reaches the maximum while the waves break immediately in front of the pier and the breaker tongue hits the pier at wave crest level; (2) the breaking wave load is sensitive to the geometric shape; for example, the breaking wave load on the square pier is greater than that on the circular pier with the same projected dimension; and (3) the breaking wave load on the square pier with the orientation of 45° is the minimum. This study provides a valuable experimental reference for the study of breaking waves on the piers of sea-crossing bridges.
