The proposed Icebreaker discovery mission will search for signs of life in the polar regions of Mars, carrying three life-detection instruments for in-situ analysis near the 2007 Phoenix site. Icebreaker's sample acquisition system will drill up to 1 m through hard subsurface ice layers, bringing up pulverized sample. The SAS arm and scoop will catch and transfer sample to the on-deck instruments. These SAS components have been prototyped and tested in chamber and analog field tests over the past 12 years, demonstrating fault-tolerance, automation, and design maturity. Instrument interfaces have been designed to constrain and meter the input dosages, and a pneumatic transfer subsystem will be used to load carousel cups. Successive SAS iterations from earlier Icebreaker versions reflect improvements suggested by a decade of field and laboratory testing.
