摘要

Agriculture is a vital part of the Western Cape Province economy, yet, it is projected that it will be affected by climate change. In its green economy plan, known as "Green is Smart", the Western Cape Province thus recognises "smart agri-production" as among the key drivers for transitioning to a green economy. This transition will, however, have implications on the food crop production in the Province. The purpose of this paper was therefore to identify an appropriate approach to better understand how the green economy transition will influence food crop production. From the review undertaken, concepts such as systems thinking, complex systems and transition theory seem relevant within the context of the food crop agriculture sector. It also became clear that understanding the behaviour of the Western Cape Province's food crop agriculture sector as a system is both complex and challenging. System dynamics modelling therefore appeared to adequately suit this specific research relative to other the approaches reviewed. Transitioning to a green economy presents itself as a possible solution to help increase the longevity of the Western Cape's food crop agriculture. The next steps for this study will be developing a system dynamics model for the food crop production, which is intended to explore where investments should be made to secure the safety of the agricultural sector of the Western Cape Province. Such kind of research has only been done on a national level and this study will therefore provide valuable information and insights to the provincial stakeholders.
