According to the Eurostat data of 2012, the Swiss Canton of Ticino - together with Espace Mittelland -is the Swiss region with the lowest percentage of early school leavers (according to Eurostat definitionthese are persons aged between 18 and 24 years who have completed only lower secondaryeducation and are not involved in further education or training). Ticino's percentage of early schoolleavers amounts to 4.7% (against a Swiss average of 5.5%): it has decreased by half over the past 5years and is significantly lower than in other European countries.Based on the results of a longitudinal study that has involved over 3,000 students in Canton Ticino,this paper aims primarily to describe the transition from compulsory to the post-compulsory school orvocational tracks. Although also in Ticino there are people with a fragmented and broken schoolcareer, three years after completing lower secondary education, more than 85% of youngsters are stillpresent in one of the post-compulsory educational tracks. More precisely, over 60% of students whobegun an upper secondary school in 2010, three years later were found to be attending, without anyprevious failure, interruption or change, the last year at the same school. For what concerns vocationaleducation and training, on account of the crisis both the school system and the labour market of Ticinomeet difficulties in absorbing students with a weak school background. Hence, some of them end up ina precarious situation already at the age of 14-15 years and have fewer opportunities to integrate inthe job market. As for those who manage to find an apprenticeship, a significant percentage of themwill change it one or more times in the following years.Another goal of this paper is to review the main measures and initiatives provided by the Canton andaimed at supporting young people during the above mentioned school transition. Overall, the systemsupporting school transition in Ticino is well developed since there are numerous initiatives especiallyfor those who are more vulnerable and have more difficulties during this period. However the presenceof so many measures increases the risk of overlaps, causing disorientation among the students;;it alsorequires considerable efforts of coordination to avoid undermining the efficacy of measures.
