摘要

Global discourses surrounding the benefits of new technologies in education are naturalised to suchan extent that they have become almost unchallenged or 'invisible'. Making this opacity visible iscritical in moving beyond the innovation rhetoric evident in today's education discourses. In thiscontext, this paper explores the reporting of a significant global study by the OECD on Students,Computers and Learning (OECD, 2015)in the Irish media. Amongst the key findings the study found,‘no appreciable improvements in student achievement in reading, mathematics or science in thecountries that had invested heavily in ICT for education' (p. 3). In the context of a prevailing positivediscourse around ICT, what happens when research evidence is produced to challenge it? Being atodds with the global discourse surrounding ICT and in a country with a significant ICT profileinternationally, how is such a study interpreted and subsequently reported in the national media? Thispaper draws on a sample of eight such reports: the corpus of text was collected from online versionsof news articles related to the OECD study in the national media in the Republic of Ireland. Thesubsequent analysis found that different findings from the OECD study were presented across thevarious news articles to highlight the significance of particular positions. Almost all articles appearedto use the opportunity to further advance the ICT agenda by connecting the reporting of the study withthe need to invest further in technologies in schools - thus maintaining and advancing the currentinvestment agenda despite evidence from the OECD report that questions the appropriateness of thispolicy. The paper draws attention to the prevalence of positivity regarding the potential of technologyin education and the role of the media in mediating such messages in line with the dominantdiscourses. It calls for a greater awareness of such influences in the context of a more critical andresearch informed consideration of the role and potential of technology in education.
