In the Arabian Gulf Region the design and construction of pipelinecrossings poses a number of challenges due to the shallow waterconditions. Typical examples are on-bottom hydrodynamic stability andVortex Induced Vibration (VIV). For both of these design aspects, thereare no specific design criteria or methodology dealing with crossings asis the case for pipelines resting on the seabed. Consequently, theindustry relies on interpretations of existing codes which do not capturethe particularities of a crossing. This paper addresses crossing VIV anddemonstrates that, in the presence of axial compressive loads, advancedanalyses are required for an assessment of the crossing behavior andpossible optimized crossing design.
