The present study was undertaken to investigate theaging behaviors, the precipitation hardening potentials and thecorresponding strengthening mechanisms of the AA3004 alloysystem. The suits of this study show that precipitation can occur attemperatures below 260 deg C in properly processed AA3004alloys. This precipitation can result in a hardening effect which isassociated with the formation of intermediate precipitates ofAl_2CuMg and Mg_2 Si phases. For 1 AA3004 alloy with anormal composition, an increase of 90-100 MPa in the tensileyield strength and 70 MPa in the ultimum tensile strength can beachieved at the 0-temper state rough a precipitation hardeningmechanism. The precipitation behaviors of the alloys were studiedby means of hardness tests, tensile tests, electrical resistivitymeasurements, and TEM observations. The phase identification byX-ray diffraction techniques (XRD) was carried out on selectedsamples and the detailed analyses of XRD spectra were made byemploying a nonlinear curve fit software (Peakfit).
