Past discharges of sewage in the Southern California Bight near Los Angeles have included large amounts of 2 classes of chlorinated hydrocarbons - the dichloro-diphenyltrichloroethanes (DDT and its metabolites dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene [DDE], dichlorodi-phenyldichloroethane [DDDJ, and dichlorodiphe-nylchloroethane [DDMUJ) and the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs),, Both of these classes of chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons are highly lipid-soluble, and consequently have accumulated to concentrations in the parts-per-million (ppm) range in local marine life (Gossett et al. 1983; Mearns and Young 1980; Mearns et al. 1991; Pollack et al. 1991; Spies et al, 1989).
