There is growing evidence that human parathyroid hormone, hPTH(1-84), and its hPTH 91-34) fragment are promising therapeutic agents for treating osteoporosis in that they can stimulate production of trabecular bone in osteoporotic postmenopausal women [1]. Unlike most current therapeutic agents (i.e., estrogen, bisphosphonates, and calcitonin) which only prevent further bone loss, daily injection of hPTH (1-84) or hPTH(1-34) increases bone mass in animals and humans. The unique bone anabolic effect of hPTH has led us to search for more potent hPTH91-34) analogs.
