This paper examines the implications for train manufacturers and equipment suppliers of vehicle supply under Service Provision Contracts. It will demonstrate how investment in maintainability during the design process provides dividends throughout the life of the train. The paper will illustrate the application of whole life costing, and the use of Reliability Centred Maintenance to ensure that whole life costs are minimised whilst a contracted level of train reliability - and thus availability - is delivered to the operator. Throughout the paper, real examples from current vehicle designs are given [shown boxed].
