Putting HEV Powertrain Dynamics into a Road Traffic Simulation Platform

Motivated by trend of model-based development technology and the real-time emission testing, road traffic-in-the-loop powertrain simulation is attended much attention. However, most commercial traffic simulation platforms focused on traffic flow and infrastructure emulation with simplified vehicle model. In the other hands, mechanical motion of powertrains such as the multi-axis in planetary gear unit must be taken account into vehicle dynamics simulation for exact calculation fuel consumption during transient operation. This paper presents an integration of HEV powertrain with planetary gear into a commercial traffic scenario platform. The main issue addressed is equivalent description of the mechanical 2D dynamics of the powertrain with the limited 1D vehicle dynamics in CarMaker traffic simulator. As a case study, testing results of real-time optimal energy management strategy is demonstrated on the constructed traffic-in-the-loop system.
