This paper discusses the requirements and potential technical solutions for interoperable wireless charging systems for electric and plugin hybrid vehicles. Such technology utilizes resonant magnetic induction and is referred to as wireless electric vehicle charging (WEVC). Future requirements for a WEVC system include: low cost, small on-vehicle pad package size, high power transfer rates, high efficiency and interoperability across systems. Interoperability is seen as a key factor for successful national and global deployment of WEVC systems. A key aspect of interoperability, discussed here, is the magnetic design of the transfer pads. Theoretical and practical studies have been conducted and an interoperable solution is presented.
