Modifications to the combustion chamber of a conventional gas turbine are necessary to burn Low- Calorific-Value (LCV) and important test-works have to be carried out in the framework of this kind of projects. The paper describes the R & D activities carried out within Nuovo Pignone in the design and development of the new dual-gas combustion chamber for the standard, industrial, PGT10B gas turbine for the THERMIE-Energy Farm (TEF) project, aimed at the demonstration of the technical and economical feasibility of power-generation from biomass by using the Integrated Gasification Combined-Cycle (IGCC) concept. After focusing on the tests campaign carried out at the General Electric Combustion Laboratory in Schenectady (USA) for the TEF project, the paper highlights then how greatly the experiences gained with the development and tests for the said project were helpful for carrying on the feasibility study dealing with the utilization of a PGT10B gas turbine into a Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) Process.
