The major advantage of the use of synchrotron x-ray techniques is the high intensity of monochromatic beams. The intensity allows direct in situ observations of changes in the chemistry of specific elements to be made within the metal/solution multi-phase region as they occur with time. The technique is sufficiently sensitive to characterize the chemistry of sub-monolayef quantities of an element with changes in electrochemical parameters. The in situ applications are generally limited to elements above Ti but tracers in the form of heavier elements, within the same series in the periodic table, can be used to follow the progress of lighter elements.
