Repeated application of fungicides for plant disease management had many a time resulted in pest (insect) outbreak. Most fungicides commonly used have abroad spectrum of activity and fail to discriminate between pathogens and beneficial Entomopathogenk Fungi CJEPF) tike Beauveria bassiana and Nomuraea rileyi. These EPFdecimate many dreaded agricultural pests like Helicoverpa (cotton), and Spodoptera (ground nut) which are defying chemical control These fungi have a great potential to be used as Biocontrol agents, but there had been only a few cases of commercial success. This is partly because B. bassiana and N.rileyi are highly sensitive to the commonly used agrochemicals like mancozeb, Benomyl., Captan, Metiram, Carbendazim, Zinab (fungicides) andMonocrotophos, Methyl parathion, Quinolphos, Chloropyriphos, Sodium fluorosilicate and Cypemethrin (insecticides). Indiscnminate use of these fungcides in the field would endanger these EPF and subsequently promote insect pest outbreak. An integrated and interdiscplinery approach to pest management is the only viable strategy to sustainable agriculture.
