While a significant victory was gained when the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) removal of aluminum metalcasters from air toxics regulations meant for secondary aluminum smelters, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) proposed some new Ergonomic Standards that will be much more costly to the foundry industry. With these government actions the foundry industry faces for significant regulatory issues as the new century begins. On November 23,1999 OSHA published its controversial and long awaited proposed Ergonomics Standard (Federal Register Vol.64 No.225, Page 65767). The six major provisions of the new proposal are: Management leadership and employee participation; Hazard information and reporting; Job hazard analysis and control; Training; Musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) management; and Program evaluation. The proposed standard was currently reviewed and comments filed on behalf of the metalcasting industry by the AES Safety and Health Committee (10Q). (Goal 1-Strategy 1.1)
