The Asia-Pacific region comprises about 30 countries that fall within the jurisdiction of the FAO regional office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP). The region has about 32 percent of global agricultural land, yet it sustains more than half (3.1 billion people) of the world's population (Table 1). The population of the Asia-Pacific region is expected to reach 4.1 billion by the year 2010 (considering the present growth rate of 1.8%). The agricultural population is estimated at 1.9 billion, that is, about 73 percent of the world's fanning households. The bulk of these people depend on rice for their food, employment and economic security.
