GETTING STARTED IN WATER GARDENING USING MINIATURE PONDS

Water gardening is reported to be one of the most popular landscaping trends throughout the United States. However, many people lack either the space or the knowledge to build a traditional large pond, such as those seen in formal landscapes. On the other hand, any novice gardener can construct a 20-65 gallon miniature pond both quickly and with little difficulty. The construction of a miniature pond teaches the skills necessary for building and maintaining larger ponds. Miniature ponds can be builtusing easily obtainable materials such as extra-large plastic pots, lined whiskey barrels, ceramic urns or free-standing polyethylene containers. Total material costs are typically under 100 dollar. Carrying through with the miniature theme, dwarf cultivars of plants similar to those found in large ponds can be grown and the pond can be stocked with smaller varieties of fish. Due to their small size (2-3 feet), miniature ponds are suited to the space limitations of apartment dwellers, allowing them to enjoy the tranquility and unique beauty that an aquatic landscape provides.
