NKK has successfully developed a new "slag-less" steelmaking process, in which the volume of discharged steelmaking slag is remarkably reduced. This process consists of two main technologies; one is hot metal desiliconization process which keeps silicon content stably low enough to optimize subsequent pretreatment, and the other is effective and massive dephosphorization pretreatment in a BOF vessel, for example, to reduce phosphorous below the levels of crude steel grades. This application accomplished the decrease in CaO consumption and reduction of slag volume by half, as well.
