Under Tunisian conditions and with advancing grazing season, the nutritive value of herbaceous range vegetation becomes too low to support animal production. This is a study of the effect of using a liquid supplement as a source of energy, protein, minerals and vitamins on both animal performances and on the preservation of the vegetation cover. In the experiment 84 females lambs of the "Noire de Thibar" breed, of average age eight months and weighing on the average 22 +- 1.5 Kg were allotted to six similar groups based on liveweight (LW). Three groups of animals had free access to the rotating feeding wheel units filled with a 90 percent sugar beet molasses, 5 percent urea and 5 percent mineral+vitamins liquid supplement mixture. The analysed data showed the following: Mean botanical composition was 42, 35.6, 18.5 and 6 percent for other Herbaceous (OH), perennial grass (PG) annual grass (AG) and legumes respectively. This available vegetation has 5.5, 5.1 and 35.6 percent CP, ash and ADF content respectively. The supplement did not affect the disappearance of the vegetation (53 and 55 percent). However available LE and PG species showed a decline of 1.5 and 8.3 percent respectively while OH and AG species increased 4.2 and 5.5 percent respectively. The supplement favoured PG and LE intake while OH and AG intake was decreased. DM content of the grazing diet was higher for the supplemented than the control animals (88.4 vs 81.2 percent) The supplement did not affect the grazing parameters: resting time, walking time and total feeding time: all these were similar for both treatment (29.2, 10.7 and 60.1 percent for the supplemented vs 26.5, 12.0 and 61.5 percent respectively for the control animals). The supplement affected the DM intake and the nutritive value of the ingested diet and led to better live weight gains (22.6 Kg / ha and 6.7 Kg / ha for the supplemented and the control animals respectively) and better net return (70.9 TD vs 22.0 TD).
