Information Technology (IT) equipment and plastic resins used in IT equipment have recently been the focus of attention of fire safety engineers, scientists and environmentalists throughout the world. At issue are the flammability safety performance of products using non flame retarded resins and the potential environmental impacts during the disposal of end-of-fire (EOL) plastic parts fabricated from resins contianing certain flame retardants. This paper will review the latest global activities and developments taking place in these areas with emphasis on needs of the IT industry, the proposed European Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and ecolabelling standards, and a discussion of views of fire safety organizations and possible solutions.
