Corrosion behavior selected thermally sprayed cermet and based alloy coatings

Nowadays, some thermal spraying technologies enable to deposit coatings which provide components primarily with corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of these coatings requires mainly high density and good adhesion of coating and substrate. Even if the majority of thermally sprayed materials meet the requirements for high corrosion resistance in terms of their composition, the generally porous structure raises doubts if the thermally sprayed coatings are really able to provide the base material with sufficient protection. This article is aimed to contribute to the extension of knowledge about HP/HVOF (High Pressure/High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) technology and particularly about deposited coatings. This paper summarizes the results of corrosion tests conducted on two selected corrosion resistant coatings - cermet based Cr_3C_2-25% NiCr coating and alloy based Hastelloy C-276 coating. These two evaluated coatings were subjected to specific corrosion tests. These tests were hot corrosion tests, potentiodynamic corrosion tests and commercially very frequently used tests in salt spray corrosion chamber. The corrosion test results proved that none of the evaluated coatings performed well in all corrosive environments. It is instead recommended to select always a suitable coating based on the knowledge of particular corrosive environments. This research confirms the above mentioned statement and explains it on the examples of evaluated coatings and selected corrosive environments. The evaluation of corrosion attack was conducted before and after the corrosion tests on coating surface and in cross-section after metallographic grinding using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
