Recovery of Iodine from Effluent of Pharmaceutical Industry

Commercial sources of iodine are ashes of seaweed, nitrate deposits in Chile and Petroleum well brines in Japan and United States. In India, traditional sources of iodine are not significant and worth exploitation. However, iodine is used in the synthesis of drugs as an intermediate and hence one can recover iodine from the effluent at least from the pollution abatement and economical point of view. A pharmaceutical industry in Gujarat developed a process involving iodine in the intermediate steps. Its effluent contains iodine in +1 and -1 oxidation states in acidic and basic streams respectively along with organic matter having phenolic and carboxylic acid functional groups. CSMCRI developed a process for the recovery of iodine from the effluent. Results are discussed in the article.
