For the Cu{sup}+ and rare earth ions Nd{sup}(3+), Tm{sup}(3+), Er{sup}(3+) and Pr{sup}(3+) doped into the silica sol-gel samples at a level of 150-500 ppm the absorption and luminescence bands are recorded and investigated for laser applications. The broad luminescence around 550 nm (100 nm FWHM) of the Cu{sup}+ ion reveals a slight shortening of the lifetime with an increase of the excitation intensity indicating on the ASE content in the emission. In contrary to the efficient absorption when pumped by a 266 nm laser the transition of Cu{sup}+ observed in emission is too weak for optical amplification. The ions Nd{sup}(3+), Tm{sup}(3+), and Er{sup}(3+) show the potential of an optical excitation by the 355 nm laser and the emission spectra observed under mild excitation conditions are reproduced for the laser excitation as well.
