In this work, two Mg-rich ternary alloys (Mg{sub}88Ti{sub}4Si{sub}7 and Mg{sub}60Ti{sub}10Si{sub}30) were synthesised by mechanical alloying. Phase transformations occurring in the samples as a function of milling time and during subsequent heating were studied by means of x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and electron probe microanalysis. The structure of the ternary ball milled Mg{sub}88Ti{sub}4Si{sub}7 and Mg{sub}60Ti{sub}10Si{sub}30 mixtures was formed by a Mg{sub}2Si intermetallic phase in a Mg matrix and a mixture of Mg{sub}2Si + Ti{sub}5Si{sub}3, respectively. During heating up to 600°C of the Mg{sub}88Ti{sub}4Si{sub}7 sample there was the formation of further Mg{sub}2Si at 380°C, followed by the formation of Ti{sub}5Si{sub}3 at 540°C. The structure of this sample after heating up to 600°C was formed by Mg{sub}2Si + Ti{sub}5Si{sub}3 in a Mg matrix. In the case of the Mg{sub}60Ti{sub}10Si{sub}30 sample, a grain size increase of the intermetallic phases Mg{sub}2Si and Ti{sub}5Si{sub}3 occurred during heating. No decomposition these intermetallic phases was detected during cooling.
