A new system for measuring oxygen permeation in hollow fiber extra-corporeal oxygenators was developed. The system is based on the use of a membrane electrode sensitive to oxygen and an electric circuit specifically designed to read the current generated by this electrode. The circuit was designed using a high performance operational amplifier and considering several noise sources that can distort the readings. Thermal noise on the resistors was reduced using a low-pass filter. Distortion on the high impedance inputs of the amplifier was prevented surrounding them by a guard pattern. Electromagnetic interference was reduced using coaxial cables in all connections of the circuit, and enclosing the circuit in a box of ferromagnetic material, which acted as a Faraday's cage. The capacitive effect between two parallel tracks of the printed circuit board where the components were mounted was reduced minimizing the length of the tracks and maximizing their distance. Preliminary results show that the circuit's sensibility is close to the required for the system.
