摘要

This paper describes some thoughts of the author on the importance of the role of nuclear cooperation in the Asia-Pacific reguion in giving significant contributions to the development of the individual countries and to the region as a whole. The paper focuses on the role of nuclear science and technology and the importance of nuclear cooperation in the Asia-pacific region, in particular to meet the challenges and opportunities in the new millennium. The paper starts off with a brief discussion on some important aspects of the Asia-pacific region in view of its strategic location and its vast potential in terms of human and natural resources. Some of the major needs, challenges and opportunites in association with a future vision are brefly presented in terms of areas of activities that can be supported by the application of nuclear science and technology. The paper then discusses some ideas on how to futher strengthen the nuclear cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, followed by some concluding remarks and suggestions. .
