摘要

The 17th century discourse of Rene Descartes introduced the world to the ghost in the machine. He presented a revolutionary mechanistic paradigm, the human body as a biological device. Today we can expand this idea to the realm of nanoscale molecular interactions. The tissues, organs, neural pathways, and complex regulatory systems of the human body are a product of a collection of many biological structures- nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, cells-all interacting in a cooperative and adaptive manner. But we are not alone, adaptation and complexity are fundamental to evolution, and as a result, biological systems on many scales.
