Poly(styrene-b-vinyl4pyridine) (PS-b-P4VP), which is a class of nonionic amphiphilic block copolymers, has been vital in the study of micellar properties, due to its high quality and relatively easy access to the block copolymers (commercially available). In addition, the same refractive index (of each block polymer) simplifies the evaluation of light scattering data, and the sufficiently different solution properties of PS and P4VP, in the block copolymer, allow for the formation of the micelles in most solvents. Furthermore, due to the presence of a strong absorbing block, PS-b-P4VP is often used to study the adsorption onto solid surfaces. PS-b-P4VP can easily be converted into corresponding water soluble polyelectrolyte copolymers by quaternization of the P4VP block. The characterization of PS-b-P4VP, with varying chain lengths in the toluene solution, revealed that most micelles behave like concentric spheres while some others, mainly those with a high P4VP content and higher molecular weights, were found to be non-spherical in shape. It is also known that PS-b-P4VP is in the strongly segregation regime and its critical micelle concentration (cmc) is very low and the size of the micelles remained unchanged in the concentration ranging between 10~(-3) and 5×10~(-3) g/ml. To our knowledge, however, studies regarding the ordered structures of PS-b-P4VP have not been reported although it is an important class of block copolymers. In this paper, for the first time, we will report on the structures of the hierarchical ordered mesophases and their subunits (micelles) of PS-b-P4VP in a toluene solution, which were studied by using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and GIFT methods.
