The experience with and technical data for collecting and handling of the com residue for large scale applications are limited. This paper reviews technical literature related to corn stover collection and handling and presents the current cost estimates for baling of the stover. Management and engineering issues related to timeliness, moisture content, dirt, contamination, and microbial deterioration in storage are all key issues. A research plan to access the true potential of corn stover as a biomass feedstock is presented.
