Structural and chemical characterization of chemically delithiated Li_(1-x)CoO_2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1)

Lithium has been extracted chemically from LiCoO_2 with the oxidizer NO_2PF_6 in acetonitrile medium in an inert atmosphere and the products have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and wet-chemical analyses. Although the oxidation state of Co increases initially on extracting lithium, the system tends to lose oxygen from the lattice on deeper extraction of lithium and the oxidation state remains constant around 3.3 + for (1-x) < 0.5 in Li_(1-x)CoO_2. The chemically delithiated end member CoO_(2-δ) is found to be non-stiochiometric with δ = 0.33. X-ray diffraction data suggest that CoO_(2-δ) consists of a mixture of O1 and P3 phases. The delithiated samples are found to exhibit metallic conductivity for (1-x) < 0.77 in Li_(1-x)CoO_2 as evidenced by the disappearance of FTIR bands.
