The paper considers the approaches to the finite element method and boundary element method in th problem of light diffraction by micro-optics. A very efficient hybrid method which requires no knowledge of the boundary conditions is introduced to simulate the diffraction of a plane wave by micro optics. This method offers several advantages over other analysis techniques in terms of both computational efficiency and storage requirements. Diffraction by refractive, diffractive and binary-phase lenses that have subwavelength features is analyzed.
