In the past 20 yr, we have significantly reduced the percentage of people who are undernourished, particularly in developing countries. A large portion of this progress is the result of agricultural research. The global population is continuously growing. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's estimates, the global head count is currently projected to be more than 6 billion in 2026 and more than 9 billion by 2043. These numbers underscore three basic reasons why the United States has made global food security a priority. These three points are: our humanitarian interests, our environmental interests, and our economic interests. From a humanitarian standpoint, the USA has a long tradition of answering the call of those in need. As one of the world'smost agriculturally abundant nations, the United States clearly sees an obligation to be at the forefront of international efforts to achieve world food security. Just last year, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan, which helped feedEurope after World War II.
