A decision support system for security planning at the United States military academy

The events of September 11, 2001 caused military installations, including the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, New York to significantly increase their security measures. This meant security decisions needed to be made quickly without the luxury of extensive planning and study. A formalized decision support system that leverages the analytical resources available at USMA can greatly assist security decision-makers in their task. One application of this was using simulation to model the system of inspecting the vehicles of the 30,000+ fans expected to attend home football games. Quantifiable simulation results of the expected vehicle queue lengths and wait times and impact on the surrounding road network were used by senior decision-makers in planning. A decision support system can be set up to facilitate the analysis of other events as well using a multitude of analytical methods. Using analytical tools that provide objective input to a decision support system, security decision-makers can evaluate quickly various alternatives to handle the myriad of challenges posed by the new security environment.
