In this paper, the general framework of an elasto-plastic constitutive model for interface behaviour is presented. Important features such as hardening/softening behaviour, phase transformation state (compaction/dilatancy) and critical state are discussed. Emphasis is given to the necessity to take the material microstructure for interface modelling into account. This is possible by resorting to higher order continuum theories such as Cosserat and second-gradient model. The discussion is enlarged to some contact problems as encountered in rock mechanics and to rate and state friction laws along faults for geophysical applications.
