The paper argues stakeholder theory and analysis has a significant contribution to make as a 'middle ground' research method. It locates stakeholder theory within modes of organisation enquiry, demonstrates the value of a stakeholder perspective through its application in a study of performance appraisal in academic institutions, and confirms the greater conceptual clarity achieved by positioning stakeholder analysis more specifically within its 'conceptual domain'.
