Wurster process (bottom spray fluid bed coating process) is a process of choice for coating of multiparticulates to produce modified or controlled release dosage forms. The unique features of the Wurster process include air distribution plates (up bed and down bed plates) and partition that organize fluidization of particles through the "coating zone". The nozzle is mounted at the bottom of a product container. The short distance between coating materials and particles during.the coating process and the concurrent spray (same direction of particle flow and spray droplets) minimize spray drying. This principle contributes to high coating uniformity and coating efficiency of the Wurster process. This process can be used to produce pellets by drug layering process, follow by polymer coating to obtain modified or controlled drug release. The fluidization pattern of particles is controlled by air distribution plates, partition height, and process air volume. Coating process parameters that mainly control the process include inlet air temperature, atomization air pressure/volume, and spray rate. Formulation aspect such as composition and solid content of the coating preparation can affect the drug release from the pellets.
