A significant portion of the household usage of energy may be consumed to heat cold water that is used in the shower, washbasin, dishwasher, laundry, etc. To satisfy these energy demands, fossil fuels (i.e., natural gas or LP gas) are typically burned in a boiler to heat the fresh water that is stored into a cold water tank. This usage of fossil fuels in the heating application leads to greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) that contribute to the global warming problem. The current environmental problems associated to the GHGE have enhanced the research of renewable forms of energy such as solar energy; this way, the use of solar collectors has been considered as an attractive solution to satisfy the energetic demands of hot domestic water. These devices use the available solar radiation to heat cold water and store this hot water in a recirculating tank to use it when it is required. Nonetheless, because the solar radiation is not equally available through the year, a backup boiler that burns fossil fuels is needed to compensate the energy requirements.
