ABSTRACT. Red pine (Pinus resinosa) plantations in the 30 to 50 year age class are common throughout northern Minnesota. Many of these plantations are in need of thinning. A thinning trial established in 1991 was used to create an "early shelterwood"and establish a two-aged, mixed-species red and white pine (Pinus strobus) stand. Our objective was to investigate white pine seedling growth and survival under three red pine thinnings nine years post-planting. In 1991, a 38-year-old red pine plantationwas thinned in three ways: a strip (geometric) thin to 100 ft~2 ac~(-1) of basal area, a thin from above to 125 ft~2 ac~(-1), a thin from below to 140 ft~2 ac~(-1), and an unthinned control left at 180 ft~2 ac~(-1). White pine seedlings were underplanted in each of these treatments in 1994. In 2003, seedling growth and survival were documented along with growing environment characteristics.
